It all began with a dream to build a creative space for artists to gather, dream, and collaborate on incredible music together. A gorgeous recording studio in a beautiful barn nestled on a Sonoma ranch with rolling hills, animals, flowers, sunlight, and the sounds of nature surrounding it.

Jake Stillman

Executive Engineer

Music producer, recording engineer, and musician Jake Stillman has worked professionally in audio production since 2009. While earning his dual Bachelor’s degree at SFSU (American Indian Studies and Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts with a Minor in Criminal Justice), he worked as an ethnographic audio recordist in the non-profit sector. Here he was a part of several projects focusing on language saving and cultural revitalization for Native Californians, including the creation of a soundscape for a permanent exhibit on Alcatraz Island commemorating the occupation led by indigenous groups in the 70s. He graduated in 2011 and was awarded top honors for his work with indigenous communities by receiving the American Indian Studies hood.

Following graduation he worked in live sound throughout the Bay Area as he transitioned into his eventual career in music recording. He spent time engineering for venues such as The Great American Music Hall, Slim’s, and Public Works while freelancing as a recording engineer for recording studios, record labels, and producers. This led to the start of Stillman Sound, the project studio he now runs focusing on recording, mixing and mastering music. He currently holds the position of lead engineer at Storyteller Sound in Petaluma, a private recording studio he designed and built in 2022 for songwriter and producer Joel Lance.

Jake found a passion for music business while helping clients independently release their music. While tackling some of the challenges around marketing, contracts, distribution, copyright, PR, and publishing, he formed Wilson Street Records, an independent label focusing on documenting and uplifting the North Bay music scene. He went back to SFSU and graduated with a Master’s in 2019 where he received the Michelle Wolf Graduate Teaching Award and The Stuart Hyde Award: Writing About the Media for his research into audio production pedagogy and music business. There he built curriculum for a music business class and launched Don’t Flunk Me Records in 2021, a student-ran label at SRJC. He currently teaches music business and music recording part time at the SRJC Petaluma Campus.
